Tutorial - Sick of reaching for your XP CD

Are you sick and tried of having to locate your XP CD when you add/remove parts of XP or when using the System File Checker?

This tutorial will show you how to copy the XP setup files to your harddrive and modify the registry accordingly.

Copying the XP setup files
1. Insert your XP CD into your drive.
2. Using Windows Explorer copy the entire contents of the folder I386 to your C drive.

Changing the appropriate key values in the Registry
1. Opening regedit:
Click Start -> Run. Type Regedit in the run box and then click Ok.
2. Navigate to the registry keys that need to be changed.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

3. The two keys that need to be changed here are SourcePath
and ServicePackSourcePath. They usually default to being the path of
your CD drive. The values should be changed to one level
above where you copied the I386 folder on your C drive.

Examples:
C:\I386 the value should be C:\
C:\Myfolder\I386 the value should be C:\Myfolder

4. You may also need to change the SourcePath key in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

That should be it, now close out of Regedit.

This is an old trick, but I hope some people may find it useful.
